When should you smile and engage in table talk and when should you be stone faced and cold as ice? Sometimes i come to the table with my game face on and never take it off. I feel so bad sometimes when i'm in this playing mood ,but it works...when ever i am loose lipped and guy smiley, eventually the good players know how to break you down and make your chips vanish.Sometimes i mix it up but you must be sneaky peeky and deceptive with the emotions you display at the table. What is best?

This is a bit of experience from a professional live poker player/coach. Read my stuff.
I dont know your experiences, but have you heard that actors make good poker players? If you have? Good, take this to the bank. I wrote in an old forum on my play, and how much the players read and what act I was using. What I would suggest, is not to go play poker as yourself. Take with you a position. How you feel that night is a big part of what you should act like. i.e. I went tired of playing in Vegas and only slept during the drive to L.A.. I went to the casino eyes red, tired but having a good few days I felt like I couldn't lose. I was right. I went in asking dumb questions at first. Sitting low in my seat, just watching the players through my sunglasses. I would only sit up to look at what card came out. Even exposing my red eyes to the table, leaning way back in my seat while the other play went on. I noticed the table not taking any notice of me. It was working. Then taking my first hand. I took up the act to find out what I came for. Info. I sat forward leaning on the table lazily seperating the pot winnings. I began to ask the table what was the longest anyone had played at one time. I took my sunglasses up onto my head exposing my red eyes setting the story. It was true. I was playing marathon poker in Las Vegas. I was with some friends for 4 days. Not hard to act tired when you are tired. This opened up the lines of info. I had a few different answers and I took note of their answers and how they responded. This was to learn the players level of poker, and how receptive they would be to future comments or anything to gain the advantage. I noticed that as I was asking the question my turn was coming. Since I had the whole tables attention I took advantage by raising preflop with no regard for my cards. "Just because", I said without looking. The play continued with no big raise. The flop came and I was staying busy keeping the table attention in my favor, making the talking players bleed info to me and keep the attention during the hand from other players in the hand. They also had absolutely no idea what cards I might have as I raised blind... just because. The flop came... and a bet was made. 4 in, it was a low bet... no where near a bet to take me out of the pot.. just a feeler bet as the 2 before him checked and I was on the button. I stopped long enough to look at my cards, but any cards were a winner. I simply raised a pot level bet, opening my eyes to my hole cards, looking around at the attention from the players in the hand I knew I wasn't getting called. I won. The next hand to be short was similar only I had a flush draw and hit the flush taking that pot down. I didn't raise them out of that pot when I hit my flush on the river... in fact I just raised like I was trying to steal without losing too much. Mind you i'm still in full role... not sure of anything.. just betting because I can. Well I took it down with the look of a player that didn't play that hand right and could of took more out of it. I know better. You get paid more from later hands if you play within certain aspects. You play greedy or knowledgable you actually lose loose players from playing loose. By the end of 45 minutes I took down about 340 dollars, and had 2 players at the far end of the table asking each other questions about me. They said..."Either he's a real good actor??? or he's real lucky... " the reply was... " I think it's both". This was my time to leave that table. My cover was not only blown, but they blew me up at the table. I could no longer use the info I had without at least those 2 players putting a wrench in my play. Long answer I know. But there is no right answer.... the tables vary... the play varies... and reads vary. I have played for years and I study poker and human behavior which was my college time love. I recorded myself playing at home games for a while at different angles early on to see any tells I could read on myself. I learned some good things that way. That's my best suggestion for you. Then go play with what I refer to as style poker. The cards matter less, position matters most, and you play the hands according to the players and their idea's of your playing. I teach a lot... and I will say that table presence is more important then the cards. If your playing against a known poker pro... you will not play the same as you will against joe blow. Doyle Brunson says, " I can win at most poker tables without ever looking at my hole cards". You have to create your table image on the tables you play as soon as you get an idea of how to present it... ie watching them for a round folding out and paying attention. Not every bad call is a loss either. If you have a bully at the table stealing, show and pay a bad call down and he will have to consider bluffing against you and he wont push you around. This alone will allow you to be in pots you should win without worrying about him pushing the pot. Show some hands both bluffs and good hands... just dont do it when your playing fancy. These timed losses will eventually come back to you with loose calls, and tight folds at the best times. You have to be the player that takes the knowledge of when they will fold the best hand, and when and how to make them pay you off. Words of wisdom from the poker coach the1steve |
