Iirc the original term was "Own" as in "I truly owned you there" and someone misspelt it. Naturally being the internet the grammar Nazis trooped all over it, while all his peers mercilessly ripped into him for "pwning" someone until it became common place.

That's what I heard, on the internet, so it must be true :-P
